We like to showcase our member's work where we can and would like to select work from individuals to highlight the talent and variety of work that we produce. Members are invited to send digital photographs of their work to the committee via email for selection to be displayed here. Here are a few points to bear in mind before sending in:
- Pictures should be of high quality and resolution
- Limit the file size or quantity attached per email
- Don't photograph your paintings under glass
- Please ensure your paintings are from your own reference material to avoid copyright infringement
It would also be nice to have a short profile about you, with photo (if you like) to accompany your work.
Greyfriars 40th Anniversary Celebration Day - Saturday 21 June 2008
Ringwood Art Society joined many of the other clubs who use Greyfriars Community Centre and took the opportunity to show everyone what we do. Greyfriars are raising funds at the moment to renovate Ebeneezer Hall and Ringwood Art Society wanted to help, so members were asked to donate paintings of Ringwood and the local area which could be sold. All the money raised is to go towards the renovation fund. We had 24 paintings donated and those not sold on the day will be on sale at Greyfriars over the coming months. Thank you to all the artists who gave so generously.

Ann Squire, our Exhibition Secretary, and Pam Mason-Smith, our President, were in attendance all day and had lots of interest from visitors in both the club and the paintings. We also had a visit from the Mayor and his wife who will be opening our Summer Exhibition at Greyfriars on Wednesday 6th August.
Club Night Monday 18 February 2008
A fascinating demonstration by Penny Wilton of Silk Painting was enjoyed by members at February's club night. This was a refreshingly different and informative evening on how to produce pictures, silk scarves, greetings cards etc. Penny explained that for painting on silk, specific silk paints must be used as they are "fixable" by ironing. The silk may be bought by the metre or in ready to use shapes, it must be stretched on a frame and secured by special (3 pronged) silk pins. All materials are readily available from art and hobby shops. The frame may be an old, empty picture frame turned over, and Penny recommended using Chinese paint brushes as they hold a lot of paint and form a good point at the tip. Various techniques may be employed, from wet-in-wet, to outlining, to tying and/or folding silk and dipping it into the pigments - leaving to dry and unwrapping to reveal unique patterns.

![]() Silk painting may be approached in a similar way to watercolour on paper. Here a wet-in-wet technique has been used allowing colours to mix and find their own way on the silk. Salt can also be added to soak up colour and produce different effects when dry and removed. |

| Here, Penny has used wet-in-wet again, producing an actual picture. | Another method, is to use "guttering", this involves using "Gutter Paint" to outline shapes. This is allowed to dry completely and then silk paint is carefully dropped within the guidelines. Penny has produced Christmas cards in this way. |

Club Night Monday 21 January 2008
Our first club night of 2008 in our new home, the large Greyfriars Hall at Greyfriars Community Centre, was a fantastic success. Even with the extra space, members filled the hall to capacity to watch and listen to our demonstrator of the month, Joe Francis-Dowden. Joe has produced several books and videos demonstrating his watercolour techniques. The topic for this evening was "Painting Water in Watercolour". Joe is known for his realistic watercolours using a "splatter" technique that was fascinating to watch. However, for novices of this method we suggest a mac, wellies and plastic sheeting for a 50' radius - at least! Click on the demonstration pictures to enlarge.

Christmas Party 2007
Another festive, fun evening was had by all at the RAS Christmas Party with delicious food, good company and hilarious games! Have a look at the pictures of the "rubbish" game where revellers had to make some attire from the "pass the parcel" debris, plus some of the entries for the "guess the celebrity" paintings and drawings! Club Night Thursday 12 July 2007
Mike Bragg, well known by many of our members who have attended his local classes, came along and showed us a printing technique with which he has recently begun experimenting.
| Using a sketch previously drawn from life, Mike placed some glass over the drawing. Then, directly on the glass, using a roller and ink, marked out the dark tones of the figure working in the negative, he then placed paper over the ink and "printed" the image. From this, 2 or 3 copies were made whilst the ink remained wet on the glass. Mike went on to apply paint to each print and made different pictures from the same source drawing. | ![]() |
