Plein Air: St Nicholas, Brockenhurst
St Nicholas is oldest church in the New Forest, mentioned in the Domesday Book but likely older than that, perhaps established by the Augustinians of Christchurch Priory. The south doorway is a beautiful example of a late Norman decorated archway. Beside the church is an ancient yew tree, carbon-dated as more than a thousand years old. The churchyard contains war graves of more than 100 New Zealand and Commonwealth soldiers.
Our members spread themselves around the churchyard to paint in the sunshine and produced some lovely work inspired by this beautiful place.
