Workshop: Angela Corben - Dynamic Landscape

Angela began the session by recapping her excellent demo of ways to draw the viewer’s eye into the landscape painting.

  • Composition - we practised sketching a composition that offered clear pathways into the scene, leading the eye through the landscape to a focal point

  • Tonal content - sketches were shaded to emphasise the pathways, using light, dark and mid tones

  • Palette - warmer colours in the foreground, cooler in the background (consider complimentaries)

  • Mark-making - ensure a variety of marks, using different tools, keeping brushwork loose

Members worked from their chosen references, applying the principles, with Angela circulating to advise and encourage.

It was a wonderfully supportive, encouraging workshop. Excellent work was produced.
