Workshop: Lisa Takahashi - Landscape in Mixed Media
Lisa began with a look at the work of some inspirational collage and mixed media artists: Michael Rothenstein, Mark Hearld and, of course, Henri Matisse .
Then, Lisa reminded us of the process:
Look carefully at your reference and create a plan by simplifying the shapes and sorting out your darks, lights and mid tones. (Lisa reminded us that it was extremely useful to use this approach for planning all landscapes, particularly in printmaking).
Work out your colours and make some papers using broad bushstrokes in ink, paint, pastel. Use all the techniques you know - wax resist, rubbing, pastel over watercolour, collage of found items, to give you a lively selection.
Trace your shapes with tracing paper if you wish, then cut out and arrange.
Add extra texture and colour as desired.
As with most good collage workshops, it was difficult to see the floor at the end of the day… Good fun.
