Art at the Alice Lisle (1)
The first of our indoor sessions during the colder months - a small gathering but a delightful start at the Alice Lisle.
It’s a lovely country pub and the history behind its name is an interesting one. Dame Alice Lisle was the last woman in England to be publicly beheaded. Alice was 71 and, the widow of a local lawyer, living at Moyles Court. Poor soul, she sheltered two bedraggled fugitives from the battle of Sedgemoor who appeared at her door on a dark summer night in 1685. She was arrested, appeared before the notorious Judge Jeffries at what became known as the Bloody Assizes and condemned to death.
Nowadays, the Alice Lisle is a cosy country pub. Members settled in to relax in the warmth, and comfort, sip some coffee and take in the surroundings. And make a drawing or two.
Many thanks to the Alice Lisle for their hospitality.
